Gillby / Frequently asked questions

A few things to know.

The data, the connections and what to expect on the water.

What is Gillby?

Gillby brings Florida marine forecasts, tides, coastal places, hazards, beach cameras and planning tools into a water app and compatible AI assistants.

Where does Gillby get its data?

Sources include NOAA/NWS forecasts and advisories, NDBC buoys, CO-OPS tides, GOES lightning and other public coastal datasets. Source names, observation times and unavailable states travel with the data. Coverage varies by place and source.

Can I build an app on Gillby’s data?

Yes. The public HTTP API starts at https://gillby.vercel.app/api/v1. Read /developers for live examples and /api/v1/openapi.json for the machine-readable reference. Respect Gillby and underlying source terms and preserve attribution and limitations.

Do I need an API key?

Public marine data endpoints and public MCP tools currently need no Gillby login or API key. They are subject to shared per-client and global rate limits. Personal vessel, places, trips and settings tools require the caller’s OAuth connection and account consent.

How do I connect my AI assistant?

Add https://gillby.vercel.app/mcp as a remote Streamable HTTP MCP server in a compatible client. See /integrations for current setup guidance. Embedded maps and panels depend on the client’s MCP Apps support; other clients can use structured tool results.

How fresh is the data?

Each source has its own observation and publication cadence. Check returned timestamps, freshness and source availability. A recently generated response does not mean every upstream source is current or usable. Missing observations are unknown, not zero.

Can Gillby guarantee a safe route or swimming conditions?

No. Forecasts, activity scores, depth samples and route suggestions do not guarantee safe passage or water conditions. Use official advisories, current navigation information, local knowledge and appropriate equipment. Sea-model waves and breaking surf describe different things.

Can another developer read my saved boat or trips?

Public data access does not grant access to your account. Personal tools require authentication and explicit account consent and operate on the caller’s records. Review connected permissions before approving access.

Does Gillby measure MCP usage?

Gillby counts discovery, tool use, broad client categories, outcomes and timing. Keyed network fingerprints estimate repeat usage; these estimates are not verified people or installations. These analytics do not store prompts, tool arguments, response bodies, raw IP addresses or credentials. See /privacy for retention details.

Where can I find the documentation and sitemap?

Developer docs are at /developers, the MCP guide is at /integrations, AI-readable documentation is at /llms.txt and the public sitemap is at /sitemap.xml.
